or maybe even China now?
The ailing EU is no help and instead of being the organisation which turned Europe away from external domination has turned us into a example of when things go wrong.
Germany, Britain and France are so-called "Great Powers" which means they have some influence in the world, but are by no means superpowers and their voice in the world is increasingly small.
Russia too, once thought to be on it's death bed has come into good health and appears to be interested in re-obtaining it's sphere of influence over Eastern Europe wherever the nations there like it or not.
China's plan seems to be to spread power by the way of all continents, with it's talk of superpowers dominating each continent (except Africa) - China gets domination of East Asia.
"Potential superpowers"
But what of Europe? The idea seemed to be that Germany, France, Britain and the rest of the EU combined would turn the EU into a sort of confederal superpower.
Whilst a nice theory it hasn't worked out that way. The problem is that the EU tends to attempt to dominate in all areas, leading to criticism and half-hearted compromises with member states.
But without the EU all that is left in Europe are the three Great powers, the former superpowers who are increasingly being outpaced by the quickly developing nations in the rest of the world.
Without a Pan-European organisation Eastern Europe is vulnerable to Russian influence again, as is Western Europe to America's.
The EU is rotten from the core and needs a good replacement which doesn't attempt to create an Federal Europe, it is needed to protect Europe from the external forces of the rest of the world who seek to use and dominate it.
