The Frisians are a Germanic ethnic group native to the coastal parts of The Netherlands and Germany. How come Frisians are not considered just ethnic Germans and Dutch, like all other continental West Germanics? Dutch branched of from Germans and were it not for them gaining their independence in the 80 years war and creating themselves a standard national language, culture, state and consciousness, they'd be seen as ethnic Germans today.

Probably because Frisian language branched before last common ancestor of German dialects (of which written Dutch and German derive).

They are considered ethnic Dutch and Germans because they were the first to arrive there. They are derived from a West danish tribe.
