Default Modern Greeks CAN read & translate ANCIENT Greek

There is a false belief among anti-hellenistic people that says that the modern Greeks are neither genetically nor linguistically connected to the inhabitants of Hellas of two millennia ago.

Likewise, there is a false belief promoted by Erasmus that says that the ancient Greeks had a different accent than the modern ones.

A simple video debunks these myths.

This video proposes random Greek people to translate ancient Greek texts from the New Testament, from the time of Plato and even from Homeric Greece (4000 years ago!)

Koine Greek is easily understandable. It's the homogenization of Greek dialects from 4th century BC when the tribal divisions started losing importance in the vast Greek world.

Before that it depends on dialect. The easiest are Ionic Greek(e.g. Athenian) which were spoken in the most art-expressing places and were chosen to base Koine Greek on. Doric Greek(e.g. Spartan) little bit different. Aeolic Greek(e.g. Thessalian) were like drunk Ionic!

Pontic Greek speakers probably have it even easier since their dialect is more archaic compared to standard Greek.

Tsakonians probably still understand it perfectly but good luck finding one.

Didn’t modern Greeks want to maintain the ancient language?
Is the modern one much easier to use?
Is the alphabet font also much different or just a bit?

I watched that vid before. It was interesting, but it does make sense as they did maintain many many similarities intentionally. They just heavily simplified the language into its modern form.
