I do not own a Garand, but have shot them; got my thumb mashed, too, 1st time I tried reloading one.
It is heavy (about 10# empty), rugged, reliable and a good shooter.
When I was in high school, I volunteered at the Springfield (Massachusetts) Armory Museum. I got to help the conservator clean many of the historical pieces, like Garand #1 (which was essentially hand made) and #87, which was the first off the regular assembly line.
My paternal grandmother was an M1 barrel inspector during WW2.
