The internet is fuming over Israeli actress Gal Gadot playing Cleopatra. What’s the fuss?
- First of all Cleopatra was Greek (and if she happened to have Egyptian heritage from her mother, it would have been Middle Eastern, not Black.)
- Gal is Ashkenazi Jewish. Ashkenazi Jews are indigenous to Israel and have a significant amount of Middle Eastern ancestry. Gal look pretty Mediterranean/Middle Eastern. It literally cannot be whitewashing when the actress in question is NOT white.
- Acting is pretending to be someone you are not. As long as they don’t have to change the actor’s phenotype, what’s so bad about them playing someone of an ethnicity phenotypically similar to their own?
