Moldova has to have this discussion of why the diaspora votes pro-EU, while Transnistria votes pro-Russian, and whether it is smart to force people flee Moldova to acknowledge their choice instead of letting Transnistria go.

Transnistria needs to be split between Ukraine and Moldova in such way that Moldova gains access to the Black Sea in return for the pro-Russian parts. Otherwise Transnistria will always drag Moldova behind.

Another issue is that pro-EU Moldovans have be realistic about the prospects of joining the EU. For the next 30 to 50 years Moldova will not be allowed into EU mostly due to Russia's opposition but also because of EU's internal politics. The only way of joining the EU is through the union with Romania. Can Moldova wait this long without becoming a complete failing state (through depopulation, perpetual economic backwardness etc)?

I know that during this round of election politicians tried to completely avoid the geopolitical question, but since the formation of RM as an independent state this question looms large.

This means gypsification and borat-isation of Moldavian society.

    It is pretty obvious.

It is our territory, which we received as "compensation" for Bucovina and the lost seaside. Even without most of Transnistria, Bender at least needs to come back. So I don't support letting it go.

Bold of you to assume that Ukraine wants more pro-Russian regions on their hands. Also Transnistria doesn't have Black Sea access. Moldova's Stefan Voda district runs 25km further to the South from where Transnistria's Souhern tip terminates. We already traded with Ukraine and got access to the sea via a small opening on the Danube at Giurgiulesti. There aren't any kind of border checks. De facto we have sea access.

That's not a problem, as long as the country continues to develop at least at the rates of the last couple of years. You should understand that when politicians in Moldova and Romania talk about a union, that's mostly syntactic sugar for being together in the EU. The staunchest opposers to a union were in 1992 and are also today in Bucharest. Unionists from Chisinau were basically told to piss off then.

What perpetual economic backwardness? It's still a dump outside of the capital and select towns, but it grew more than our two neighbours percentage-wise since independence. It isn't getting worse, although everyone obviously wants for it to reach Western standards overnight, which is impossible.

Depopulation also has advantages, because it affects the rural and pro-Russian/Eastern electorate the most. The central region is doing relatively well, and given that the share of young people 18-40 here seems to be higher than elsewhere, the future seems to be more urban and progressive. A population of 1.5-2m, that's mainly concentrated in urban areas sounds pretty reasonable for a country of our size. Finland has 11 times our area and only 5m people.

It is the better way. They should set achievable targets, rather than making bold promises that they cannot fulfill within the time of their mandate. Moldova has a clear association agreement with the EU, out of which less than 20% is being applied in practice. So the direction has already been set in stone, although it's been so since at least 1995-1996 for those who follow closely. Less blabbering and more work needs to be done.

You’re the poorest county in Europe with countless problems and you worry about becoming “Borat”? If you’re not Boratland now, what are you? Boy we don’t want to disrupt the huge success story that is Moldova. Is your greatest selling point that you don’t have Roma? That sounds very Borat
