Researchers establish link between racism and stupidity

Despite their important implications for interpersonal behaviors and relations, cognitive abilities have been largely ignored as explanations of prejudice.

We proposed and tested mediation models in which lower cognitive ability predicts greater prejudice, an effect mediated through the endorsement of right-wing ideologies (social conservatism, right-wing authoritarianism) and low levels of contact with out-groups.

In an analysis of two large-scale, nationally representative United Kingdom data sets (N = 15,874), we found that lower general intelligence (g) in childhood predicts greater racism in adulthood, and this effect was largely mediated via conservative ideology.

A secondary analysis of a U.S. data set confirmed a predictive effect of poor abstract-reasoning skills on antihomosexual prejudice, a relation partially mediated by both authoritarianism and low levels of intergroup contact. All analyses controlled for education and socioeconomic status.

Our results suggest that cognitive abilities play a critical, albeit underappreciated, role in prejudice. Consequently, we recommend a heightened focus on cognitive ability in research on prejudice and a better integration of cognitive ability into prejudice models.

While I do agree, I think they're omitting a lot of factors. It's actually more complex than this. Racism, eugenics and racial ideals used to be norm among the higher echelons of society. Would one call the ancient Greek philosophers, European Imperialists, Nazis or ardent Zionists dim-witted?

IMO racism in modern times is more a product of inter-ethnic tension. Most inter-ethnic interaction in the western world takes place among the lesser educated and skilled. The lower skilled native westerners are competing for jobs and to a lesser extent sex mates as well; Now, apart from low-skilled immigrants, who is their competition?

Racism is high in the upper class and the lower class, while the mid class, with acceptable education levels, accept the models proposed by media easily, because of having a mind with too much abstraction. In a shattered mind, everything passes. Upper class designs the way for the mass to be conducted, being racist as a class and in lower class racism, I think there are two factors. Less abstraction, which affirms people with their natural instinct and possible economic competition. So, it´s more like not being racist is stupid. The higher iq is always racist, unless being a heavy wanker with domination fantasies.

Yeah, this describes you're attitude well.

About the study, I've seen this happen growing up. The dumber kids grew up being outwardly racist or some sort of prejudiced person.

Racism can easily be linked to stupidity of the person behaves violently towards other races. However, I would say it is also human nature to want to stick to our own, it would be more towards our instinct than something implanted by societies. If you grabbed a black baby, raised by black parent, and put him between a crowd of white people (or vice versa) The baby would most likely cry because it isn't used to the exposure of such different people. As I mentioned before, it is human nature (as well as animal) to want to stick to your own, not stupidity. It is only stupidity when you start to hate other races for no other reason besides ¨they look different¨

Racism has been over advertised as a bad word/concept/idea. So, now mixing the two words with no distinction, will make nationalism feel for the average person as the concept that racism has been programmed to strike their minds. Jewish mechanics. It all makes perfectly sense. There have never been ancient Greek philosophers - only ancient Greek priests. They wrote the story in which Greeks were immortal and the greatest people ever. And yes, religions manifest the same preoccupation about in-group out-group divisions.

Most racists are narrow minded people,who can not appreciate human diversity.
