There is nothing sad about that, and it does not mean they are ashamed of their ethnicity. I'll give you a couple of facts:

1) S.Korea, especially Seoul is extermely westernized. It's like being in NYC without anybody understanding English.
2) The notion / ideal of beauty is just a global marketing concept. The most influential and rich nation spreads whatever ideal is pop. For many decades / century it's been Hollywood (maybe European fashion/models/Paris/London too). Bigger eyes make Asian girls look more like global celebrities -> they find their niche and increase desirability -> profit (sorry for my online poker background and business education, but here profit means success or rich husband ).
3) South-Korea is an extremely male-centered, physical apperance oriented society. It's not equal at all between genders, and even many educated women have the sole aim in life to look beautiful. Women are not ashamed to be "just housewives" like in Scandinavia for example they are.
4) It's a common human trait to be interested in exotic qualities and something that you don't have. Either in smaller scale like a blonde girl liking darker haired guys or in a bigger scale as in Asian fancying Westerner or the other way around. Does not matter how "racialist" you are or committed to keeping to your own ethnicity still subconsciously most of us are looking for something different, only the magnitude of the difference varies.
5) Millions of european women would die to look Asian. Cute and girly and the perfect woman of many men.

So ye, in conclusion, it's not that sad.

Yeah I guess it's sad but it touches all of us living in this World we have now, so what ever happens in Korea doesn't really stand out from the rest of it.

Gender inequality is of course only a bad thing, but I was just rationalizing the plastic surgeries of Korean girls with the argument that it is not unaccepted there to just "look good" and have no other function in life,except maybe being a mom which obv is an important function per se.

That's like saying someone with a unibrow or a female with thick body hair and a beard is "ashamed of her Caucasoid race", that's not sad, it is normal, if having free choice and comparison.

Mongoloid almond eyes can be very beautiful, but not the squinty-small ones, they never were and can be only considered norm or even rather attractive in an isolated place without proper comparison and choice, by becoming an accepted standard by majority occurence (like the unibrow in females as well in some Iranian areas).

But that will never last once the isolation is broken up and that was almost always good, if there were biological consequences. Because usually, such local-regional traits were not generally advantageous, almost never, because if they would, they would have spread beyond that.

That's like it is with the short-fat legs too, they being "an issue" in South Korea as well, and there are even surgical corrections done, yet this is clearly not just an "identity issue", as it is a problem for many Europid women with that trait as well.

East Asians just have a different attitude, the attitude to "work on themselves and make themselves better", this idea of "everyone can improve oneself". Now this ideas, if being taken seriously and consequently, have to mean, that if you see a deficit which can be changed, you just do/try it.

They might go to far at times, but this ridiculous postmodern Western nonsense of being "proud of oneself" and "accepting oneself", regardless of the traits and qualities in question is nonsense. If you are homosexual, don't see good, being stupid or fat, you are not great. Probably you are, but not because of these traits.

Again, Koreans are not all the same, they live largely among themselves, there is a huge variation of traits - they actually compete with each other and surely their current standard is better than some alternatives. Anyway, the real problem, there and in the West, is contraselection, because the more favourable variants might succeed socially, but they don't biologically, leading to an actual decrease of favourable traits and an even greater need for "helpful modern methods", to improve the bad start genetics provide for the mass if the dysgenic trend goes on...

In China that's already a huge problem in various areas, especially those which became Westernised.

So that's the real tragedy and sad, that the better variants don't procreate more often, but have no or just a few children rather, the classic dysgenic, contraselective trend.

That's truly horrible, the best local variants will decrease, even if they dominate now in social life and as celebs, being the most desirable ones in their current society.

Specific standards always existed, just look at classic Japanese paintings, they almost always show North Sinid and Yakonid faces, not the more plump Satsumid and Tungo-Palaemongolid ones. At that time, larger noses were sometimes more preferred than today in East Asia...
