That would obviously be mutually beneficial, no? They could become great trading partners, even more so if Russia's economy is modernized. Let's face it, few countries, if any, in the world have as much natural resources as Russia. It is in Germany's economic interest to strengthen the partnership.
The best Russia for Germany is banana (oil) Russia, only the resources, and Putin is the best Russian leader for Germany. Russia already buys pumps and pipes from Germany and Italy, do you really think that SU couldn't produce such things? And what the hell Germany should help to modernize even this stone age industry? Let Russians buy everything in Germany (and still not in China, praise to the Allah).

At first glance, this seems like an attempt to reestablish the USSR. If I were in the US government, I would watch this closely, but it is still a decision for the countries involved.

    .

Who knows, maybe the Krauts plan on ditching the EU in favor of this new continental bloc.
Yes, and create severe instability in the process. None of Russia's neighbors wants to see that alliance other than Serbia. Similarly, few are in a mood to see Germany go its own way. The last German-Russian alliance started WW2.

And Germany has been carrying a lot of EU deadbeats, Greece comes immediately to mind, for a while now. Dumping those deadbeats in favor of a more vital and economically promising Russia sounds like a smarter plan to me.

I'm thinking France, the UK, and US will have a thing or two to say about any German ideas in that direction.

Maybe, but are they going to do to stop if it actually happened?

Russia had no choice other than cashing in on oil and gas, since it was virtually bankrupt. Now, that it has financially recovered a lot, the economy can be diversified, and it is certainly on top of the agenda. It all just takes time ... Rome wasn't built in one day, and there is no quick way to glorious success.

I think both the USA and Russia should stay out of Europe. Your Russo-American conflict is not our conflict, yet you've both dragged us into your problems, and we in Europe have been the losers of your conflict. The USA has Iraq, Afghanistan etc, but Russia has Georgia, Chechnya.

Why should Russia move closer to Europe? We should rather build a fence to keep them out.
