Argie, you're starting to confuse me. Let's start again.

    I said

I can't recall him saying that it was an Irish surname
    Then you said

I think Combs is an Ulster Scotts surname.
    Then I said

Argie, you know where it ultimately originates. West of England without a doubt
    Finally you said

I'm not doubting for a moment that your great aunt has done ancestral research and discovered Irish ancestry. With a surname like Combs, however, your ancestors would probably have been living in England before moving to Ireland.

They were probably born in Ireland, they could have been descended from plantation folks. Also, there's a small cemetery behind her house on a hill where she said I had Irish ancestors buried and, I think, ancestors that came directly from Ireland.

So where did the surname Combs come from? It's not an Irish surname. Think about it.

Yes, I'm sure it originated in England. Odoacer said it was pretty common in Northern Ireland. Though I think somone said it may have originated in Northern Wales too. My granny said she was going to pull out some really old family records soon, but she has shinles right now. I can't wait to see my great aunt's family tree too. When I get my hands on them, there'll be even more names to look up!

It probably originates from the Welsh word for valley, `cwm`, but this isn't a surname in Wales. It became a surname in England.

Too many T's (we'll ignore the 's' where there should be a 'ch'... )

    Orange Order

He is showing you some Ulster-Scot/Scots-Irish culture.

Now I will get my mixed Irish Catholic and Scotch-Irish butt out of this thread before I start fighting with myself.
