Default Iran tells Turkey to change tack or face trouble

A key aide to Iran's supreme leader said on Saturday Turkey must radically rethink its policies on Syria, the NATO missile shield and promoting Muslim secularism in the Arab world - or face trouble from its own people and neighbours.

In an interview with the semi-official Mehr news agency, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's military adviser described Prime Minister Tayyip ErdoĞan's invitation to Arab countries to adopt Turkish-style democracy as "unexpected and unimaginable".

Turkey and Iran, the Middle East's two major non-Arab Muslim states, are vying for influence in the Arab world as it goes through the biggest shake-up since the Ottoman Empire fell, a rivalry that has strained their previously close relations.

There is two superpowers in the Near East, aside from Israel. Those are Turkey and Iran. Iran's influence gained supreme power after her most powerful enemy the Arab Nationalist Iraq was destroyed. As well Iran's role in Middle Eastern affairs became more important. As well the United States created what is called the Shia crescent which goes from Iran to Lebanon. The Assads themselves are Shias and hence there is some loyalty to Iran and as well the support Hezbollah enjoys. Turkey is relatively a secular Sunni nation and it wants limit Iran's influence and Shiaism political power in general. It's in the best interest of Turkey to let Assad falls. To Iran, this would be a nightmare because it's political and spiritual role would be heavily weakened. All of this happening is due to the invasion of Iraq that saw the Middle East being divided into two major sectarian camps. As well Turkey and Saudi Arabia are both influencing the Sunni regions of Iraq, well Iran has total control of the Shia regions. Despite the secularism of Turkey, it has always shown itself to be the patron of Sunni Islam. As the conflict in Syria is a sectarian one.
