Spanish passport, the fourth most powerful in the world
The passport is the door to the world, a document that gives access to other cultures and experiences. There are passports that have many restrictions to move around while others allow you to do so without a visa. Who are the citizens who have it easiest to travel? Which is the most powerful passport? According to the latest Henley Passport Index, updated in March by consultancy Henley & Partners, Japan, Singapore and South Korea are in first place in the second quarter of 2019, with visa-free access to 189 countries. These results consolidate twelve months of Asian dominance, after Japan climbed to the top spot for the first time in February last year.
Germany ranks second, with direct access to 188 countries, and a group of five share third place in the index, which is based on exclusive data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
With 187 points are Denmark, Finland, France, Italy and Sweden. One point below (186), in fourth position are Luxembourg and Spain while the UK and the USA are every day further away from the first position they jointly held in 2015 and have to settle for a fifth position for the UK (direct access to 185) and the USA, with 184, occupies the sixth position.
Afghanistan and Iraq remain at the bottom of the rankings. These passports have free access to only 30 countries, a position they have held throughout the 14-year history of the index. The United Arab Emirates continues its upward trajectory and is just one point away from being among the top 20 countries in the index.
