It's interesting to me Putin has decided to seige rather than storm the remaining 500-4,000 troops in Mariupol. I get he doesn't want to further damage the industrial area but by his own admission this will tie up a lot of troops, which makes the tactical value of Mariupol somewhat null.

This is the billionth time said; Kiev wasn't a primary goal, it was used to exert pressure on Ukrainians forces, AND HOLD THEM THERE. The Kiev effect has been so strong that Ukraine has been technically forced to maintain a strong presence in its capital in case Russia decides to do a second incursion in that region.
