Didn't the fact that there were Britons in Great Britain - which is also well established in the name of that state and people - suggest something like what you eventually experienced? (I don't mean as for the genetic "fringe Celticness", but as for the British Isles genetic commonality.)
Earlier dna studies still played up the differences between Insular Celts and the English. When Stephen Oppenheimer published his finding in 2006 he claimed that the Insular Celts descended from the Basques. I always expected the Irish to be separate genetically but it was well after this before I started looking at dna studies. What surprised me was the clustering of British Isles populations. That was a bit like a red flag to me. Not only that they clustered together but where they clustered. I now think how all this stuff was obvious at the start. People like the Irish cluster how they should considering their geography. Why people would believe that neighbouring populations have no relation to each other but many did believe this before all these dna studies were published.

No. I believe lineages and heritage over dna percentage. I'm also smart enough to know these tests are largely for entertainment purposes.
