Women always worked, sometimes informally in family businesses but it was really only women of high society who could afford not to work. Society back then was very class stratified, the majority were poor working class with an exceptionally wealthy aristocratic class. We're better off now with a majority middle class society, I still haven't heard a convincing argument that the old days were better.

The 50s was the era of the happy homemaker. Domesticity was idealized in the media. Women who chose to work were often considered selfish.
