Damn, they must have been very tough than because modern HU Police is very intimidating in comaprison with Croatian. To me personally they have always been very nice though especially on border crossings. In Yugo Police was much tougher too, but in Croatia Serbs were very overrepresented in that profession.

I'm sure Bratislava is lovely and Slovakia is pretty and all, but I'm going with the one that's arguably the most gorgeous country in the continent.
Croatia, all the way. Croatia all over yo facia. Yeah, very few in central, eastern and southern Europe can compete.

If money and employment was not an issue, I would probably lean more towards the Croatian coastline due to it having a very pleasant climate and even smaller towns, unlike in Slovakia, are often very beautiful and offer plenty of historical landmarks and a generally beautiful landscape. I think the women are also far more beautiful, and that Slovak women are oddly overrated in this aspect, although probably just to admire, in my experience Balkan women are too fiery.
However, I also enjoy the Carpathians and the vineyard regions there, and that would be my second option.
I didn't particularly enjoy the Tatras, not worthwhile when the Alps are so close as well.
In my experience, one of the differences has been the extent of centralisation. Slovakia is extremely centralised, while Croatia still had good infrastructure and opportunities at the coast, not only in Zagreb, places like Split are very beautiful and in good shape. Traveling outside of Bratislava is like going thirty years into the past. I can't speak for the north of Croatia as I have not traveled through it as extensively as the coast, of which I have visited a significant portion, islands included, and have found small towns, villages and such to be a far more pleasant environment than those in Slovakia outside of the Carpathians in the west, architecturally cohesive, interesting, and more welcoming.
The capital cities themselves are both very beautiful and offer a fair share of historical buildings. Zagreb is more green overall, Bratislava has forested hills encroaching on the city. The historical center of Zagreb might be somewhat nicer and larger. Slovakia does however have better work opportunities and economy.
