Norwegians gave us a few explorers, inventors, scientists and writers. They're also home to Opera, sell gas and oil to England, have rich fishing areas and good landscapes and a nice culture.

Option is "Balts"(ethnic Baltic people) not "Baltic states". Estonians are a Finnic people and therefore I seperated the two.

Liking Norway the way I like it, I can't see why Norway is the "captain obvious" choice here. I think they are at least on pair.

Vikings? Awesome

Nordic Literature? Awesome

Kalmar Union? Quite a powerful state

Black metal? you name it!

Beautiful and healthy people,stable and prosperous economy (at least since WWII)

Salmon? nice!

They have also provided multitude of Winter Sports champions.

But boys i think the baltic states, the mere fact that those people still exist being in the crossroads of vikings, germans and russians , already gives them BIG CREDIT (IMHO)

Their languages have survived (ulike sooooo many others) and they too have a rich and old literature, beautiful music and folklore (comparable to that of Norway) and, again IMHO a wonderful culinary tradition maybe even richer and more varied than Norwegian.

Now. Lithuania was one of the most powerful states in the world during their union with Poland. The Lithuanian -Polish dinastic union is one of the richest and most interesting periods of the history of Europe, certainly more powerful and influential than the Kalmar union ever was. Along with the Austro-Hungary empire, Byzantium and the Otomans, certainly my favourite Eastern, states between the Vth century and the end of the First world war.

All this said, and having visited both regions, I think that they are at least comparably beautiful in terms of landscapes, architercture, and people.

Also, they provided many great sportsmen and women to the Soviet Union, an Lithuania is, put simply , the best nation at Basketball this side of the Atlantic (proportionally to its size at least)

Their life expectancy, education and aptitudes are also to a high standard, most of them are bilingual with Russian and the great majority also has a good command of English. Take that, a largely trilingual region (speaking about the younger generations at least)


If you ask me , Norway vs the Balts alone is a fair draw. If you put the Estonians in the equation, I might even be inclined to go for the 3 Baltic states.

Estonia is just epic.Non- Indoeuropean speakers whose anti soviet revolution consisted on getting the whole fucking nation to sing forbidden songs at once? Now that is something memorable.
