I'm not sure of who they are counting for "Portuguese Empire" and other Empires as well. 12 million is more than we have now.

If you read a little further Portugal is listed separately at between 5-6 million. Presumably the empire is counting Mozambique, Angola, etc.

    Funfact:
In 1900 there were more Latvians than the Norwegians
In 2010 there are 2-times more Norwegians than Latvians.
Thank you- WW1, WW2, Stalins' labour camps and 50 years of living in a communist hell.

Maybe Norway having found oil on their coastlines in the 1960s also has something to do with it?

And Mexico only had 12 million people in 1900. In 2010 there were 14 million Mexicans living in California alone.

Probably yes, but it's not only the case of Norway-a lot of countries have doubled their population in 100 years, while the Latvian population has shrunk from 2 million in 1900, to 1.8 million in 2010.
