In Japan there is xenophobia against Westerners?

These days Australia and Japan are very close allies. There is a lot of trade and Australia and Japan launched the Asia-Pacific Economic Forum in the early 1980s. The Five Eyes comprise of Australia, New Zealand, Canada, USA and UK. It is an intelligence sharing alliance. Japan is interested in joining this. Japanese don't have any bias against Australians or Westerners in general although I'm not so sure how much the average Japanese knows about Australia culturally judging from this video.



I think Japanese in general are quiet and like to be left alone. They aren't the most gregarious of people. They are also not as comfortable with foreigners in general as other countries.

Regarding Ireland most Japanese do not know much about it and frequently confuse Ireland with Iceland. They seem to know more about Iceland because of volcanoes. They just don't hear much about Ireland.

I know two Serbs from Austria (Born and Raised in Austria and Austrian citizens, live and work in Austria) who went to Japan on holidays. They loved it, and they said Japanese dont know what Serbs are, but if you tell them Novak Djokovic they know it. You have to tell them Novak Djokovic.

This is one example of why I think the "white privilege" concept isn't entirely nonsense. Even in a society as famously closed and ethnocentric as Japan, at the very least it can be argued that Westerners don't suffer as much prejudice and discrimination as do other foreigners (though there are certainly examples where they do).

That's because Japan became industrialized by adopting ideas from Western Europe and the USA (Meiji Restoration).
