Default Hipsters: Passing fad or serious concern?

For the past two years or so the term "hipster" has entered the popular lexicon that I have encountered, and has become increasingly frequent in its use either in positive or negative ways. In many ways, it seems to represent the same sort of nihilism and solipsism that many teenage fads all seem to represent for both our generation and successive generations.

I was interested to know exactly what the general impression of this phenomenon was, especially from the Anglosphere but also elsewhere if the phenomenon is that widespread. Is it just another incarnation of passing teenage fads obsessed with themselves or does it represent something darker and more dangerous overall? Are we talking about a representative of decadent society or merely a new form of old troubles? What place do these fads, like "punk", "hipster", "indie kid", "emo", etc. have in society?

A video my brother sent me in reference to the Hipster phenomenon:

No different than any other generation's conformist rebellions...I'm so totally different than you, but there are conventions I must follow.

A generation that is NOT regarded as dickheads by their parents, now that would be a cause for serious concern.

I don't think that is so true. It's made more so in the commercial culture of all subgroups against each other. Parents going against their children actually really helps youth culture. Media brainwashed parents get all these fears, lost basic parenting skills and just make wrecks.

Anyway, they're bloody nerds, with nerd idols:

I liked a couple of their songs (except the singing) so I saw them and was actually disgusted by how the singer looked and talked and sung live. He said to the previous band before starting in computer-nerd guy voice, "PLAY WELL, FRIENDS"

And actually those are some of the older bands. I don't know what they listen to now. They have to outcompete each other for obscurity, conflating that with outsider success. The worse sounding, the least 'commercial' it is, so they 'like' really bad singing, random band names like 'CARS GO CHAIR'.

They can't dress, they look like crap, sometimes they smell, they're idiots, they are incapable of communication, have no friends, etc.

They're anti-commercial and "indie", so they buy iPods like everybody else, and pretend everything they do is "ironic" so they can't be made fun of, to the extreme of liking extremely commercial things as a gag nobody thinks is funny. Can't make music, have no taste, hate everything reflexively to feign refinement, which again, is easily marketed to. IDK if they've heard of dancing.

They are not "confused" but quality people, but the real rejects. I somehow doubt the worst extreme is that pan-Western (cept Canada) since America seems to have a special store of nerds. Actually, people who buy every product and stay as mainstream as possible are probably worth more than they.

UK hipsters are not as bad, although the UK is a source for a lot of international hipster retard movement, incl. Scotland. Glasgow I guess.

They fashion themselves after an oppressed homosexual subculture, more so than being tolerant but actually pretending they're gay, with the girl sort of 'dating each other' confusingly since they don't actually want to. NYC probably hate a better original core of them, but SF and Portland are sort of their meccas of nothing going on, basically hypercapitalism where everyone pretends they are socialists. I haven't been to Portland, but Seattle and SF seemed to be populated by extremely ugly people. I counted 1 attractive girl in Seattle, and who was in that ugly-pretty way.

IDK. They've managed to convince themselves they're not nerds, and yet they are. No offense to all Borrebys, but the fat Borreby with glasses is a big stereotype among them. Just go to Starbucks.. That's the most of it. And they are the death of the counterculture, which is good.

Youth rebellions against the previous generation to the extent that they exist today largely seem to be a product of a post industrial, commercial culture. In other words, they are shallow. To the extent that such youths seek out real meaning and value from such fads over something more enduring and more substantive, it is a concern. But I would say the hipster fad (particularly among whites) is natural in a hyper-feminist society. Men have been taught that sensitive men are the superlative. Most men know better, I think. But many do not.

I was probably a huge hipster in the eyes of others (although I never thought of myself in such a way and never tried to put on a huge image) in my late teens and early twenties. I'm sure some people still think of me in such terms. My musicial tastes (punk, post-punk, among many other genres) often align me with some subgroups within the larger subculture/counterculture hipsters fall into, so to speak. But I reject their fickle concerns and their pretentious nature.

For guys, if it gets them laid................. Alright then they will wear it, go to it, act like it.

From what I have noticed at various college parties is that guys will do what is necessary or what they think is necessary to get laid. It appeared/appears to me that it is the girls who actually take the pomp and superficiality to heart. They really buy into the whole party culture, only later realizing that the guys were just there to get them drunk and have sex with them.

    For instance.

Tonight I'm going to a party. I have a girl I'm into already so I'm not doing anything but getting reallllly drunk. Yet my friends I'm going with, they are going to try and hookup (sex).

Have no delusions, that is the only reason they are going. They will stand around drinking until they have achieved sufficient liquid courage then they will proceed to chat a girl up and convince her that the party is really lame and that they should go 'chill' somewhere. You might guess what chilling involves in guy speak.....

Now the girls on the other hand, to them this is an 'event' of major importance (even though they will go to a party every other night). To girls, going out and acting the part is the point. Being seen to be seen is the whole motive on their ends. They dress up not for the guys, they dress up for the other girls in attempts to outdo them. Getting with a guy is secondary and completely on a whim, it is not their objective, being talked about in the facebook pictures that will be posted the next day is their objective.

Perhaps the most retarded subculture ever, a compilation of all the bad elements of previous subcultures (emo, etc). They've been around for several years or so, I haven't seen much of them in the past year or so, either because they are fading out or I no longer live in northeast urban areas. Also they've given a bad image to a lot of good things, such as PBR and Miller High life.

Who wants to deal with that? Now you see what we were talking about on those threads (prior to your arrival I think) about preferring non-American women.

It is a completely different social universe thanks to cell phones and internet than what our parents grew up in. Relationships, real ones even, are created and fall apart all through text messages now. Texting etiquette is a must if you want to be in a relationship or even attempt to start one. The gap in understanding socially between my parents generation(s) in connection to mine and lower is not a river or a gorge it is a galaxy or two. Not growing up dating with the use of cell phones and then having children who did and do creates a massive social/cultural barrier that cannot fully be comprehended at face value.

I think what you have here is the same phenomenon you see with every generation of youth: The development of a small yet visible counter-culture that influences the aesthetic tastes of their mainstream peers. In the 70s, all of the kids looked like Hippies, but the vast majority of them weren't. In the 90s, all of the kids looked like plaid-wearing, wrist-cutting, Cobain-inspired nihilists, but most of them weren't. Today, a lot of young people (myself included) enjoy hipster fashion, but aren't actually hipsters.

It's really nothing to worry about.
