For the past two years or so the term "hipster" has entered the popular lexicon that I have encountered, and has become increasingly frequent in its use either in positive or negative ways. In many ways, it seems to represent the same sort of nihilism and solipsism that many teenage fads all seem to represent for both our generation and successive generations.
I was interested to know exactly what the general impression of this phenomenon was, especially from the Anglosphere but also elsewhere if the phenomenon is that widespread. Is it just another incarnation of passing teenage fads obsessed with themselves or does it represent something darker and more dangerous overall? Are we talking about a representative of decadent society or merely a new form of old troubles? What place do these fads, like "punk", "hipster", "indie kid", "emo", etc. have in society?
