Do you smile/make eye contact while walking down the street?

If I smile to a complete stranger it's usually as disdain or something bothers me about the person, otherwise I don't do that.

You will look rude if you don't smile.

Americans are a very sociable people. Strangers having a random conversation isn't unusual. You note this if you ever do jury duty. By the second day most people have their groups and you would think they had been friends for years.

This is a regional and urban vs countryside thing in the UK. In the countryside people are far more like to smile, say "hello" or tip a hat. Whereas, in the city you wouldn't due to vast amount of individuals (you would literally look like the "village idiot" with a constant grin on your face).

Same in the US. We wave when driving down a gravel road to the car going the other direction. We nod when passing, while walking, sometimes saying hello.

Of course, I also work in the "friendliest town in the US." People will talk to you as long as you aren't brooding or menacing. It's sad that some places people won't even acknowledge each other.

I find people that won't hold eye contact to be shifty characters.

Sometimes I'll smile, though that can come across as flirty.

I do but not overtly, but Im a friendly person. I say "Grüss Gott" to strangers I dont smile or stare at them but I have a friendly face, thats a austrian greeting and means literally "Greet God", Austrians often say that.

I always smile and do this gesture to everyone I meet to show my appreciation!



I almost always adhere to the old age ritual advice, "Poke them once, shame on them..... poke them twice... shame on them still!.... point and laugh.... run like the wind faster than Lance Armstrong's career!"

I don't usually stare people on the street but if i at a cafe shop i usually stare and if there is a single woman i smile.
