That was probably the norm in the 70s and 80s.

Pretty much, I joined the navy at 17 in 1978. My older brother and sister left home about the same age, most people treated you as an adult about 16.

Why should I admit something that's not true? I blame my generation, the Boomers, and older Millennials for the inferiority of the Zoomers. They were coddled and pampered by my latchkey kid generation as a form of compensation, which my parents did to me in a material way since they had impoverished childhoods, *and* the Zoomers were brainwashed with propaganda from older Marxists, so I feel sorry for kids, especially since today's culture and entertainment outright suck. I kept my vow to not turn into the "get off my lawn" guy (that's Frank's role on the forum), and I definitely don't hate adolescents/young adults, some of whom are great people.
