The avatar should relate somehow to persona of the account, not necessarily display the physical person behind the keyboard. I would never just use my photo because that would be unoriginal. I find the TikToker in my current avatar entertaining and I wanted to distance my forum persona from Neverwean and babyhood.

By the way some users like Incal and Laredo have used revealing photos in their avatar/signatures which could make some people uncomfortable. As long as the female subjects are appropriately clad, there should be no controversy.

I would not use a female or feminine avatar because it would seem disingenuous; the avatar should relate to the disposition of the user, and men who identify too closely with femininity (closely enough to wear it as their internet guise), or view everything through the lens of sex, as a rule are uncomfortably odd in their demeanor. Same goes for women vice versa.
