This is a thing dating way back before Euro colonialism and you can find it (almost) everywhere around the globe. It`s simply because the aristocracy or higher members of societies/cultures/tribes tend to have less tanned skin, because they dont have to work in the sun all day. So the common census: lighter skin = noble or higher status.

I thinks there's not a single reason: in most of Asia it's well known that the reason is the darker you are the lower your origins (peasant, farmer, etc) while the lighter you are your origins are supposed to be higher class/caste.
In the rest of the world it also varies but from what I've seen on this forum the people who suffer OWD (or any sort of race obsession) the most are the ones living on the anglosphere but with recent non-anglo (or nordic) ancestry: for example on the US you have Lie-redo, on Australia you had this "italian" member who was banned I think his user was Ctwentysevenj he never posted terroni and I think the adm of Italic Roots is some dude from the Bronx right?
