    Default Why Didn't the Soviets Automate Their Economy?: Cybernetics in the USSR

    From a Marxist perspective. Nonetheless interesting:

    The Soviet Union had a chance to computerize and automate its economy. Why did efforts to achieve this vision not succeed? This video covers a brief history of cybernetics in the USSR and offers some explanations for the ultimate demise of automated planning in the Soviet context.

    I believe that it was V. M. Glushkov who was one of the few who could still save the Soviet economy in the 60s (and the entire Soviet project in general), bring the management of the planned economy to a fundamentally different level and overtake the Americans in creating the Internet and developing computers. And even start building a moneyless economy. But he was not allowed. Apparently, the fundamental decision to curtail the Soviet project has already been made. Defeat was already programmed. OGAS, of course, could prevent this, and it was not allowed to be realized.

    No one better than Glushkov himself will tell about this.

    From the book by B. N. Malinovsky "History of Computer Technology in Persons" (by the way, I recommend reading the whole book to understand how and where Soviet electronics and cybernetics developed, and who should be thanked for its ups and downs).

    Memoirs of V. M. Glushkov at the end of his life:
    Spoiler!

    Brezhnev and Glushkov died in 1982, and the project finally died.

    This is how a handful of humanitarians and party bureaucrats finished off the planned computer economy of the USSR, Soviet cybernetics and the Soviet Internet. The techies were stupidly pushed aside, 20 years of empty talk on the topic at meaningless commissions and completely losing the topic to the Americans.
    Let's compare with the attitude towards techies at the dawn of the Soviet project (see the composition of the GOELRO commission and the first Gosplans, the GOELRO plan on > 600 pages was prepared in less than a year and immediately launched into implementation).

    Why were techies pushed aside? Because the decision to curtail the Soviet project, as I believe, had already been made, the implementation of the topic made humanitarians and bureaucrats (who were cramped in the USSR) unnecessary, as it brought the economy of the USSR to a completely different level, in which there could be no even a question of the fall of the project. The level of a moneyless economy, computer management of all economic flows.

    That's it. So the USSR was different at different times, because the people who ruled it in different periods of time were different, the country was stupidly surrendered, systematically preparing the population for tacit consent to curtail the project (see where the descendants of those who participated in all this live).
    That's all. So it’s very disappointing to read now that the USSR was not good at cybernetics and computers. It was. But not allowed. We must remember this.

    I am going to put this through Google Translate tonight. You see: I have wondered what a Cybernetic communism would have look like, and I am inclined to believe that had the arms race not taken place, communism would still have been around today (and likely would have been politically far more liberal as this whole police state came forth out of a siege mentality).

    People (both Dutch and Russians) want freedom and Filipinos. Russia is no exception. There was no freedom - this is the reason for the collapse of the USSR and the demise of socialism.

    They could have pulled it off, but small-minded men in too high positions got cold feet. The above reads as a litany of short-sightedness when it comes to the top of the CPSU. Incredible - in their conservatism and because they wanted hang on to their own power, they f....ed it up. A very interesting, albeit frustrating read, KM.

    A bit to add:

    Nowadays there is such a famous Russian and Israeli entrepreneur Yuri Borisovich Milner, he is a billionaire, owner of DST Global, founder and former co-owner of Mail.Ru.
    Milner is one of the world's most influential investors in the technology sector. Through the DST Global family of funds, Milner has invested in the world's largest Internet companies, including Facebook, Zynga, Twitter, Flipkart, Spotify, Groupon, AirBnB, WhatsApp, and many others.

    So, his dad - Boris Zakharovich Milner - Soviet and Russian economist, professor, member of a number of foreign academies and associations, namely:
    American Management Association;
    American Academy of Management;
    International Academy of Management;
    Finnish Academy of Technical Sciences;
    World Council for Scientific Management
    and so on and so forth. He became a member of these structures back in Soviet times, when even traveling to capitalist countries was an unrealistic dream for most Soviet citizens.

    Milner-father was also the head of the control systems department at the Institute of the USA and Canada of the USSR Academy of Sciences.

    It was he, Milner-father, who “sank” OGAS with his articles, burying the idea of creating a Soviet information system. And his son Yuri, years later, like no one else, turned out to be ready for the advent of the era of information platforms, but already on an American base.
