French and Romanians: when visiting Portugal, Spain or Italy, which language do you use?

I use English, but I can understand the locals talking in their native language (except the Portuguese).

Ironic you say that, because I find that Iberian Portuguese and Romanian can often sound alike. (On the other hand, IMHO Brazilian Portuguese sounds much more like a 'conventional' Romance language).

Yes, many people note the similarity in sound. Unfortunately, I cannot understand Portuguese, maybe in the future I'll study it a bit.
