Is Athens Greece the ugliest EU capital?

As for Athens, I have not yet had the opportunity to visit and would like to do so in the future. From what I've seen in pictures and videos it doesn't really seem to be a very picturesque southern European capital like Rome or Lisbon and it's a bit strange that the capital of a country with such a rich history doesn't seem to have much more to see than the Acropolis\Parthenon (I'm talking about cultural tourist attractions I know it certainly has other things). I need to visit to draw my own conclusions.

It's because despite the ancient glorious past (Athens had around 300-400K people during its golden age which was huge for the time) not much remained and it's one of the most "modern" european capitals, mostly built during the 20th century.

Does anyone have pictures of what Athens used to look like between, let's say, 1880 and 1950 ? What kind of architecture did they use ?

I found some images dating back to the early 20th century. Athens just looked like your average European city, for the most part. Just, well, a lot hotter and different vegetation.







So what killed Athens ?
