    Default Yotaphone: Russia's Failed Smartphone

In today's video we're going to learn the story of the Yotaphone - the Russian government's failed smartphone. Ever since the Cold War, the Soviet Union was competing with the United States in technology development. After the collapse of the USSR, Russia inherited the throne of USSR's heir as a superpower and the main opposer to the West. This means that Russia still wanted to compete. In 2010, the Russian government came up with their answer to the iPhone - the 2-screen phone called Yotaphone. It wasn't very successful. Let's talk about why.
    ---------------------------------
Too bad that it was a failure. This phone was pretty much made for me!

98% never knew about it, who even needs it now? I mean some 5-7 years ago you could use it as undistracting device, but masses do not need it anyway and now it's outdated by hardware and software. It has nothing to do with government but with Skolkovo's innovation project.

IMHO, the main reason for the failure of YotaPhone in the market is that it was a "political project" - it was mainly purchased and received as a gift by Russian officials, while the mass buyer simply did not understand why he should pay the cost of flagships from Samsung or Apple for an unknown product.
Due to the wrong selection of the target audience, the manufacturer had to cut prices below prime cost and sell phones at a loss, which led to bankruptcy.

I found this 2014 review of the Yotaphone (Gen I)

What’s got a 4.3-inch 720p IPS panel in front and a 4.3-inch E Ink display in back? The YotaPhone, natch!

It’s been over a year since the Russian manufacturer launched its first generation product, and I’ve been using it on and off for several months. While this handset is handicapped in north-America (1900MHz 2G is the only compatible band), it provides a unique and interesting user experience.

A much improved YotaPhone was announced at MWC last February and I’ll be getting one to play with, but in the meantime, check out my gen 1 video review…

Found a review of the Yotaphone (Gen. III), dating back to 2019

The Yotaphone 3 is still one of the few dual screen phones in 2019 but should you spend your cash for a Snapdragon 625 phone? Let's find out!
