Archaeologists and experts who have spent decades investigating the Roman city of Itálica, in Santiponce, Seville, have always faced a big question: did this town, the birthplace of the Hispanic emperors Trajan and Hadrian, have a circus? A couple of findings seem to indicate yes. For example, in 1799 some farmers brought to light an exceptional mosaic – now lost – of circus scenes, images of muses and the seasons of the year. Also in the theater, another of the most iconic prints of the site, in the area of the orchestra, the semicircular space located between the stage and the stands, a series of graffiti has been documented with representations of racehorses even with their names.
