You cannot be a Freemason AND a Christian. Freemasons forfeit their eternal life with God, for some short life of success on earth. That's why the devil loves it

In the UK people become freemasons mainly because of status seeking, and the material/career benefits joining "the club" give.

I work with a woman who's BF is a freemason. She claims they are both catholic . When I told her how he can be a catholic and a freemason at the same time she didn't know what to say. If the pope found out he'd ex-communicate him

Her BF uses the masonic lodge as a way of advancing his career, etc

She once told me the BF got in to a fist fight with another bloke. the other bloke pressed charges for GBH but her BF was let off without so much as a warning because the officer who dealt with the case was in the same masonic lodge. She told this tale with some pride it has to be said...look at the increased status my BF has now he's a Freemason, etc

That's because people think this life on earth is all there is...so they don't pay attention to things of an eternal nature, they don't think about pleasing God because they don't believe in him. They would belong to a church, yes, but that doesn't guarantee anything.

We had a bit deeper discussion of the question yesterday

I’ve heard of students being recruited from college into Masonry. Then they are helped to advance into different key positions, where they can be useful later on. Nothing is free in this world, so at some point they’ll have to return the favor of being backed and helped.
Like in your example, to turn a blind eye instead of applying the law. Or maybe in a more serious instance, to cover something incriminating or do other things. Maybe at some point they’ll have to do something that goes against their consciousness, however they are tied by vows and secrecy, so they’re not free to act as they want. This is my understanding of "selling one’s soul to the devil”.
