Default What do Greeks really have in common with the Turks that's often talked about?

I mean, I hear it all the time, only for it to be instantly overturned in one of the usual dogfights on the Internet.

Like, apart from some foods, some words which are used mainly in street talk, and some gestures as I can remember from the top of my head as of now, what do we really have else in common? In terms of religion, and all the folklore that is derived from it, next to nothing, if not, nothing at all. Language is also ENTIRELY different, apart from some loanwords mainly for slang (street talk), which again, have their own terms in Greek as well. Mentality is also different, with some commonalities, which, to be honest, can be found all over the Meditteranean. Anthropologically, Greeks and Turks don't look alike that much, if I'm allowed to say that.

So, what do we and the Turks have in common? I'm not making this question with malicious intent, just genuinely curious.

Seems there are some similarities since both Greece and Turkey are Mediterranean countries, as you already mentioned in your original post. However, if you are to compare us with our neighboring countries, the second most similar one would be Greece, in my honest opinion. Azerbaijan would be the most similar one.

Agree with you. Our similarities are less than many foreigners think. Yet, we have some similarities as you already mentioned.

Except some individuals, Greeks and Turks look different. Even we Turks from Balkans look entirely different than Greeks and have different culture if you think we live/lived closer regions.

Yup, pretty much that. It's crazy that's not mentioned how Azeris are much closer to Turks. Like, Greeks and Turks aren't that similar, if not, very different.

Yep, already mentioned in my OP... But apart from baklava, there are differences for many foods that share the same name. Cacik for example means something different in Turkey than tzatziki does in Greece.

But, I wasn't talking about that much. I meant if there's an actual similarity of essence.

Some Turks resemble Anatolian Greeks - but other than that nothing. Not even anthropologically. Greeks dont have any Turanid influences

If Turks want to claim ingredients like Honey, Lentils, Walnuts, Cheese, Beans etc let them.. even Yoghurt was an ancient Greek ingredient.

    Except it really isn't.

Yoghurt in ancient Greek was called oxygala. Literally "sour milk", which is what the exact taste of yoghurt is like due to the yeast.

As for today's time: the method of production of yoghurt in Greece is very different from Turkey, but that doesn't seem to bother you when Turkish companies misappropriate the name "Greek yoghurt" for products not even made in Greece or with the Greek method of yoghurt production, ay?
