Default Genealogy/Former Ottoman and Turkish Cities Prior to WW1

    Hey everyone,

l've looked around the forums for awhile and have picked up a lot of in-depth information around certain topics, l was wondering if any members here might be knowledgeable about former Ottoman cities dating before WW1 or if there is a section of the forum more appropriate for this topic?

In gathering some of my great grandparents census and immigration records from Ancestry, my great grandfather lists his city of birth and very clearly indicates that he was born in Turkey and identities as 'Turk' on all documents. When l've searched online for the city, l never find a trace of anything even similar to what was listed as his birthplace.

He was born around 1891 and came to the US around 1920, is the city of 'Denye' familiar to anyone or maybe a city that was renamed?

(His wife is Cypriot-Turkish and all of this is reflected in my DNA test but when they came to the US they intermarried with Greeks. l'd just like to know more about our Turkish background)

Thanks so much for any information

Are you sure that you've searched properly ?

Thank you! This was definitely one l did find and considered it, l just don't have enough experience or knowledge about Turkish to really know if this Ir.
He writes in hand print and not cursive so it's very definitely an 'e' not Denya, but l don't see why it couldn't be both

Ok, he wrote Turkey then, but this is modern day Cyprus which makes more sense that they would both be from Cyprus.
