Gingrich: Palestinians are an 'invented people'

(CNN) - GOP presidential frontrunner Newt Gingrich suggested in an interview aired on Friday that those living in the Palestinian territories are an "invented people."

"I believe that the Jewish people have the right to have a state," Gingrich said on The Jewish Channel. "Remember, there was no Palestine as a state. It was part of the Ottoman Empire. And I think that we've had an invented Palestinian people, who are in fact Arabs, who are historically part of the Arab community."

He added: "And they had a chance to go many places and for a variety of political reasons, we have sustained this war against Israel now since the 1940s. I think it's tragic."

His comments, seemingly off the path from United States foreign policy supporting a two-state solution in the Middle East, come days after Gingrich attended the Republican Jewish Coalition in Washington, D.C. and as the current crop of GOP candidates compete for the GOP Jewish vote.

Describing the Middle East peace process as "delusional," Gingrich placed heavy blame on the Palestinian Authority and the role of Hamas, the ruling political party in the Gaza Strip, for the ongoing unrest.

"Both of which represent an enormous desire to destroy Israel," Gingrich said. "I think there's a lot to think about in terms of how fundamentally you want to change the terms of debate in the region."

Gingrich quickly faced criticism over his comments. On a conference call with reporters, surrogates for former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, Gingrich's closest competitor, questioned the former House speaker's approach.

"I'm not sure that kind of statement gets us any closer to accomplishing an agenda," said Mary Kramer, former U.S. Ambassador to Barbados and Romney surrogate. "And so that's one of the things that I think makes me a little bit nervous about Speaker Gingrich is that he sometimes makes comments that open to very broad interpretations."

I hope Gingrich isn't actually a historian, because this makes absolutely no sense. What does Palestinians being Arabs (a cultural term by the way) have to do with them not being a real people? Iraqis, Yemenites, and Omanites are arabs as well, yet they are their own individual ethnicities. No one is dumb enough to say, "there's no such thing as Iraqis they are ay-rabs." It's like saying Spanish people don't exist because "they are really latins."

Edit: Plus to bring up a point made by Romney in last night's debate, Gingrich shouldn't be speaking on behalf of Israel and making racial comments towards the Palestinians. He's probably causing more damage than anything.

He may very well be the nominee for the simple fact that though he has personal failings, he's a man, and everyone knows it, whereas Romney is a weenie. He leads in polls from 18-27 points in key Midwest states.

What joke the Palestinians are not invented. They have lived in that land as long as one can remember. They have their own dialect, culture and traditions which some of it is unique to their own, not found across the Middle East. But does anyone takes that seriously unless you are heavily brainwashed by the garbage that not only lies to you but corrupts your values and destroys your family.

In my experience when someone is demonized as a 'globalist' it's newspeak for 'He doesn't favor a blame America foreign policy which favors Ron Paul-style isolationism and withdrawal from the world'.

Anyway, Gingrich is perhaps the most gifted orator in the US, is brilliant, and can destroy Obama in the debates. He's probably the most presidential of candidates in decades.

They're a civilization-state. To say they're a people is not really accurate though. The concept of a homogeneous Han ethnicity is an invention of the Communist Party and the regime has long been plagued by ethnic turmoil on their periphery, much of which they took by genocidal conquest only in the last few centuries.
