Interestingly, ten are in Asia, seven are in Oceania and three are in the Americas.

    Top 10 :

We were 0.691 in 2011. Google tells me:

“The Human Development Index (HDI) measures each country's social and economic development by focusing on the following four factors: mean years of schooling, expected years of schooling, life expectancy at birth, and gross national income (GNI) per capita.”

I was thinking about this and realized something. All of the other factors obviously we know why they went down, but education is interesting to me. The Syrian school system is very hard and it is basically impossible to keep up with if you are dealing with anything except school… so we have this issue where people who are poor literally are unable to make it even to high school if they aren’t very smart. And most of Syria is poor.

If you have money, you can pay for tutoring and you don’t have many responsibilities. If you have no money and are of average intellect, you’re fucked unless your parents sell their souls to support you doing school full time. And the work itself is needlessly advanced, my brother was doing a biology/medicine track in high school then he went to study outside of Syria and they did not even cover these topics until the end of his medical degree. “Well it is a good thing more topics are being covered, right?” No, people completely give up early on because young teenagers are not supposed to deal with this kind of stress, it is outrageous. The education system is not meant to educate the populace but instead weed out kids early on and put them on an army track or just keep them poorer. As more issues come into the country, this goes into full force and automatically sweeps more students out of schools because they can’t sustain the lifestyle.

Of course you can escape all of this by going to private schools and universities I don’t know, this randomly came up in my mind, it is only somewhat relevant lol. But besides war, these more casual things end up making slight drops even worse.

Yes, for obvious reasons Syria has had one of the sharpest declines in HDI in recent years, along with Libya and Venezuela.

I almost cried "foul" on Polynesia. Then, I saw that Africa was excluded.

The Pacific Islands, although generally poor and politically/economically insignificant, are by and large peaceful and benign in a way that much of Africa is not. (Oh, and they produce loads of good rugby players too. )

The main concern from this list IMHO is Pakistan and India. They are among the most populous nations on Earth - India may well have surpassed China, and even Pakistan has surpassed Brazil - and, whatever their advances, are still riddled with terrible levels of poverty and sectarianism.

Venezuela nowadays is not in decline, but quite the contrary. As you know, I even have a thread about it in the Latin American section. It was in decline until maybe 6 years ago, but not now.

You are stuck in 2014-2017 regarding Venezuela.

But if we go by what mainstream media says, we would have to believe that Venezuela is the worst of the worst, and extremely miserable like Haiti, LOL!

I'm not a fan of Maduro, but what people don't get is that since current Venezuela is not acting like a banana Republic that is completely under the US American influence, but has its own independent international politics, including good relations with China, Russia, Iran and what not, and among other things, wants to join BRICS, the world pro-US hegemony establishment don't tolerate that, and their corporate media always wants to portray Venezuela 24/7 as the worst of the worst, and people with mediocre IQ and sheep mentality buys it, same as they buy that Russia intervention in Ukraine was "unprovoked" and it happened because Russians are evil and and Putin wanna conquer the world, and US and NATO are the good guys who just want to defend freedom and democracy.
