There's some overlap i agree but i can still differentiate both the groups easily.

South italian and Sicilian are very similar...
Dark skin? in comparison to your pale skin I would say yes

As a matter of fact a clear percentage of them are clearly tanned.

Probably the most dark people in Italy are calabrians, but they are similar all the rest of south italians and sicilians.
