Probably you already heard that in Queen's New Year's Address, Queen Margrethe II announced her decision to step down as the Queen of Denmark on January 14, 2024, passing the throne to Crown Prince Frederik. So it happened officially today, Queen Margrethe II has given her rule on her son.

Is it a big deal?

Queen Margrethe has had an impressive 52-year reign, making her the longest-reigning monarch in Danish history. Ascending to the throne at the age of 31 in 1972, she has been a cherished figure and a unifying presence for Denmark for years so for sure it's significant for Danish recent history. Also, it is the first time such an event has occurred in Denmark in almost 900 years. It is set to be an extraordinary and significant occasion.

Following the abdication, Crown Prince Frederik will assume the title of King Frederik X of Denmark and take on the role of Denmark's Head of State.
