I'd have compared Bulgaria to Southern Midwest, it is pretty similar in climate, just drier. Both are fertile lands. But Southern Midwest is not Southern USA.

I also don't understand why we are lumping the whole south together and what is the point of that comparison? Dalmatia is very small and homogenous in climate and landscape, and is also 1% the area of southern US. Obviously it is very different from Poland too.

these lands are quite similar to very specific regions of the middle south of france , rocky areas like "les cevennes" with (almost) dead volcanos ,believe me for trekking in these lands ,you need to be in good shape
