I had opened a similar thread called "Modern definition of ethnicity" but I believe the title was somehow inccorect. I should have said "Definition of ethnicity" because what I have written under my previous thread is exactly the definition the the term "ethnicity".
Definition of ethnicity from Cambridge Dictionary:
a large group of people with a shared culture, language, history, set of traditions, etc., or the fact of belonging to one of these groups.
Definition of ethnicity from American Dictionary:
a large group of people who have the same national, racial, or cultural origins, or the state of belonging to such a group. (This definition is from American Dictionary)
Source: https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dic...lish/ethnicity
The first definition does not indicate any ancestral relationship when defining the term. Also, the second definition tells that people of the same ethnicity may or may not have close ancestral relationship.
Summary: Close ancestral relationship is not always a must for two person to be of the same ethnicity. They can be genetically distant but still be considered as of the same ethnic group.
If a person is considered as a part of an ethnicity by at least half of the other members of that ethnic group, he or she is also a part of that ethnicity.
