    Liking Dutch & German Old Masters - has ever Eduard/Edward Habich crossed your way? He was a renowned collector of exactly that kind of art.

    Never heard of him before, but now read: interesting.

    As for Hamburg silver a coal and oil trader, Erich Schliemann (actually related to the Mecklenburg archeologist Schliemann), got into that topic and he even promoted to make the big work in three voluems Die Goldschmiede Hamburgs, ultimately published by him. He died some 20 years ago and then was also auctioned at Southeby's big parts of his collection. I later contacted a son of him and got a lot of interesrting information. Often traders and mercheants do big contributuion to such topics as you simply need some mome money to be active in such fields.

    His family even saved the paintings of the Hessian Landgrave, but he wasn‘t very thankful, in opposite.
