The man in the photo to the right is Yuri Andropov, who "... was the sixth paramount leader of the Soviet Union and the fourth General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union." Former KGB chairman and Soviet dictator Yuri Andropov was Russian President Vladimir Putin’s mentor. As the great historian Anne Applebaum wrote in 2012:

[Putin] initiated a minor cult of Yuri Andropov, the longest-serving KGB boss in Soviet history (1967-1982), as well as general secretary of the Soviet Communist Party, a post he held only briefly, in the year before his unexpected death in 1984. From 2010s he almost totally gave up referring to the USSR and Soviet-nostalgic rhetoric as something positive, more pointing out the mistakes of this time and decisions which leaded to current problems. Not the last reason was that most of people who could be attracted by Soviet nostalgia are either 90+ years old or 2 meters under soil.

Also, his favourite philosopher is anticommunist Ivan Ilyin, who lived in Germany until 1938 (then moved to Switzerland until the end of lie) Ilyin was a big admirder of Spanish and Portuguese fascism (despising German national-socialism, racism, at the same time).

I do not think that despite he does not have in mind "resurrecting" the Soviet Union as a political entity you deny that much of their mentality and way of facing the world is inherited from the Soviet mentality of the Cold War, nor the semi-dictatorial and authoritarian aspect of their way of holding power.

What's the ultimate goal of all of this, Smaland? Do you seriously think that someone needs restoration of some dead and useless ideologies of Modern? How? For what? You're so stuck in this paradigm, for whole of your life, probably you will never change as you're an old and extremely conservative person. This World has nothing to do with the World from the times you've been 20-30 years old. The reason of this war and other wars are not some "Western Nazis" just like not some "Eastern Commies". You remind me extreme Russian White Guard admirers (I'm an admirer, but not extreme one, I won't march the streets in White Guard outfit) who literally live in the times of Civil war, reconstructing and transforming their real life to insane level like they still live back then. I guess same happens with American Civil War period in USA.

An organization named SMERSH is not existant at the moment, it was an effective organization from WWII period. Its functions are fully covered by already existing branches of intelligence and counter-spy services.

This symbolic chaos is taken under control now in MoD corps, volunteer battalions are free to use what they want. In the beginning of the war literally everyone dependant on his political views would put anything on his vehicle, tanks etc.

But some tank having a red flag over it proves Putin to be a Commie just like pagan symbol proves him to be a pagan sacrificer. A total nonsense. It's all the insignificant ideological games for people whose different beliefs are used for the benefit of a common cause, and their personal ideological stances do not matter at all by itself.

An article in Newsweek identifies the man in this photo (posted at dailystar.co.uk) as "Sergey Mardan", a "Russian state TV host". His commentary is provided in a tweet linked to here. I don't believe that 'every last' Russian is like what Mardan says, and perhaps many of the Russians who don't feel this way have already left the country during the war. But this is what Mardan is saying.

Russia has reactivated the (Joseph) Stalin-era ‘SMERSH’ spycatcher agency, the latest indicator a new Cold War emerging and Russian attitudes towards its enemies and their supporters in the Ukraine war.

SMERSH, a counter-intelligence agency with its name deriving from an abbreviation of the Russian for ‘death to spies’ appears to be active again, a British intelligence digest notes, stating that Russian 'operatives' wearing insignia of the group have now been spotted. Russia had already announced it was reforming SMERSH in 2023, notes Ukraine’s state media organisation Ukrinform, and the UK Ministry of Defence notes that what this means for Russia’s actual capability is unclear, it nevertheless underlines Russia’s 'strong focus on the supposed infiltration of external threats into the country'.
