Interesting. I am not aware of this connection or history. But more generally, I will say that, with the possible exception of Central Asia, the Pacific Islands are probably the least studied and least reported places in the world.

I still find them intriguing though. They seem to live simple lives yet are largely happy and have nothing like the crime and violence that plague much of Latin America and Africa especially (in different ways).

Oh OK. But NZ does look very appealing to me: beautiful landscape, friendly people, not too hot like Australia, good at rugby, interesting blend of British and Maori cultures, a very high trust and law-abiding society...

Agreed, NZ is one of the most beautiful places on Earth.
