There is an interesting book called The invention of the Jewish people by Shalmo Sands who is Israeli himself, the thesis is that Judaism is no different than Christianity or Islam in being multiethnic religion. There were several significant conversions to Judaism historically the most famous of these are the Khazars, the kingdom of Adiabene , the Himyarite kingdom in Yemen, Kindah in central Arabia , several less known ones that probably occurred.
