    Default Anglo-Normans of England

Both my parents have Anglo-Norman surnames which to my understanding is pretty rare.

How much "Norman" DNA or northern French DNA should someone like me expect to find in a DNA test, I'm planning on taking one soon and would like to know what the typical amount would be. Would Anglo-Norman DNA just show up as English? I have no linage outside of England has far as I know. I know surnames don't mean a great deal but it can still give you a idea of linage.

Because of pedigree collapse almost any ethnically Engish persons should have some degree of Norman ancestry.

If you have no known ancestry outside England you're very unlikely to get any French on a commercial DNA test. As Raedwald alluded to medieval Norman ancestry is baked into the pie of English genetics, only recent French ancestry would show up. If you're from the Northeast you'll probably get a lot of Scottish though (in AncestryDNA).

And Anglo-Norman surnames are just English surnames now. They don't exist in Normandy.

So how do you find out then? I want to know where I am REALLY from. I would like to see the break down of Norman , Norse, Anglo-Saxon and Brythonic if that's even possible. You can defiantly tell in England who has more admixture and what kind, we are fairly mixed for a European nation.

I'm not from the northeast, I thought that said Northumbria not Northumberland. Some of my family members have done DNA tests and it's shown little to zero Celtic admixture which was quite surprising to me. Saying that we don't have any gingers, or green eyes, its all very dark brown hair to blonde hair and all blue eyes.
Anglo-Norman are English surnames yes, that's what the Anglo part means.

Is there a way to find out ancient DNA? Like a break down of Norman, Norse, Anglo-Saxon and Brythonic if that's even possible?

The Gretzinger paper on Early Medieval England from 2 years ago should give you some idea of your ancient ancestry. Commercial DNA tests only purport to show ancestry from the last few hundred years max, and beyond that time your ancestry would be the same as the local gene pool of where you're from anyway.

normans made essentially no genetic contribution to the british isles but apparently there was a lot of migration from france over the last 2000 years that has significantly impacted the gene pool.

You will have significant Celtic admixture embedded into 'England' or 'British Isles' on DNA tests.

In my English side of the family Norman surnames are also pretty common.

Is that you in the picture? You do sort of look like a typical Norman type from England imo
