Let me use an analogy. When I was a child my parents purchased me a little handheld device toy called 20Q. My simple 9 year old brain was fascinated with it and couldn't believe it guessed what I was thinking almost everytime I asked it a question. Obviously now has a 30 year old woman I know better and am aware of how it did so - being that it contained a reasonable database of information which lined up with its pre-determined questions. Now, I suppose you could argue that it's appropriate sequence of questions is a reasonable form of artificial intelligence, but when you look deeper you see it was merely a simple box ticking excersise with minimal amount of logic used by using the process of elimination with every question asked. My point is, the more naive the person, the more impressive the "AI" will appear. It's somewhat disappointing that people are so impressed with current AI such as chatGPT. The same way they experience it is the same way I experienced my 20Q device as a 9 year old girl.

    Alright, that's a better answer.

But what do you think happens in a human brain when it answers a question, other than sequentially coming up with words, each selected based on prior context. What word fits a sequence is learned through experience.

So how is that different from AI?

Give it 5 years, maybe less.

I dunno, I have mixed feelings about it. I think it's certainly useful when it comes to information queries (much of the time, when its not hallucinating) or coding and development. You have to know how to write well-thought out prompts. But.. we're not that close to AGI or a singularity or anything from what I understand. Right now it's just getting really good at cobbling together data that it scrapes from around the net and presenting it in a way that (most of the time) makes sense based on the prompt. Basically just calculating the probability of each next word making sense and applying given the prompt. There's no real thinking going on there behind the mask. GPT 4.5 just does it better and in a more presentable way to the end user.

However, there are some scientists and researchers involved in the field who argue for a push away from the current "generative" AI models to "goal-oriented" or "predictive" AI, which would be the kind that might eventually lead to something greater, but that requires a pretty fundamental shift in conceptualization of the technology and the underlying machine learning models, neural networks, etc.

I also think a huge breakthrough in the tech will happen when we combine quantum computing with AI. But I shudder to think how that could go very wrong.

It's very interesting stuff. Who knows where we will be in two decades. I think they should be devoting more time to imposing some sorts of regulation on it since the field is growing at an astonishing rate.

There are many applications for it aside from things like GPT models, and they seem to be promising. I wonder what will happen if and when they are able to do most people's jobs though. Do we naively believe we will just stop working and live in a leisurely utopia? I think not.

It's here already - you can replace call centre teams with A.I.

I think that all of the white-collar/office jobs and "educated" jobs will be replaced by AI first:
people without physical skills, only education and information-processing ability.

Even many programmers will be replaced as the AI learns and programs itself.
(The technology may even become too complicated for future generations to understand, as the last generation retires.)

The unskilled labourers will be replaced by migrants and then by automation/robots.
Even many skilled labourers will be replaced.

Society will split between the elites (owners), the physical specialists (often blue-collar), and the masses who will be sedated with drugs, food, entertainment, and then eventually killed off by premature health problems, drugs, vaccines, suicides, assisted death, etc.

It's all fun and games until you're blackmailed and/or framed by someone. "Why were you in a hotel room with a sheep?"

Yes, fantasy will become indistinguishable from reality, truth itself will become obsolete.

"The Trump pee-tape is real! Video evidence!" Even if someone discovers it is fake, the damage will already be done.

And AI internet censorship will only go in one direction, you can be certain.
