Default Do you use "jealous" and "envious" interchangeably?

I always learned that they were different; that envy is wanting what someone else has, and jealousy is being overly protective of things that are yours because of a fear that they can be taken from you.

I.e. "I am envious of my friend because of her fancy new sports car" versus "Seeing my girlfriend with her flirtatious guy friend makes me very jealous."

But some people use jealousy as a synonym for envy sometimes, even though the definition of jealousy I gave cannot be switched with envy.

Not since I moved to Italy.

Anyhow I meant to click the middle option.

    Both words are from Latin.
Jelous means "possessive about something or someone", while "envy" comes from the words "video" (I see) + "in" (not) and means "I can't see". Latin folklore believes that the eye has particular magical powers. When you hate someone so much to the point that you "can't see her", "don't stand to meet her" you can throw her "malocchio" (evil eye).

I think the translation of those words to Portuguese is ciúme for jealousy and inveja for envy, and I use them differently.

Envy it's when we would like to have something that others have. I envy your car - I'd like to have a car like yours.
Jealousy it's when we are afraid that others feeling may not be exclusively towards us. This is common for relationships. When our girlfriend talks to another guy, we may get jealous because we're afraid that she may like him.

Yes, basically "jelousy" is a feeling of possessivity, while "envy" is more negative, it's the desire for something that you don't have that can lead you to evil actions or feelings. A man can be jelous. I'd say that in romance countries a man that is not jelous at all about his gf could offend her.
