"The "civilization" phase witnesses drastic social upheavals, mass movements of peoples, continual wars and constant crises. All this takes place along with the growth of the great "megalopolis" -- huge urban and suburban centers that sap the surrounding countrysides of their vitality, intellect, strength, and soul. The inhabitants of these urban conglomerations -- now the bulk of the populace -- are a rootless, soulless, godless, and materialistic mass, who love nothing more than their panem et circenses. From these come the subhuman "fellaheen" -- fitting participants in the dying-out of a culture."

    Ad infinitum ...

For a townie, to visit the countryside may well leave him hankering for the vibrancy of mass-society. To have the mind occuppied at anytime of the day. To be surrounded by people, to be where the power is, where the news is, where the politics is. To work in the corridors of power, or on the production line, or to sit in the largest institutions of learning and culture. To walk it's illuminated streets, to sit outside a pub and watch the people go about their business. To hear touring musicians, or the sirens of the emergency services, to see the show or catch the movie. To look out across it at night and see that it never sleeps. The city is a mighty beast with a fast heartbeat.

In my experience, once one is tainted with the urban lifestyle, the countryside does become boring. It takes a while to get back into rhythm with the rural village one grew up in.

I'd hate to ask what they're identifying as a "Briton"?

of course its boring. You Brits dont have guns so you cant go shoot, cant go hunt, cant even blow stuff up for fun. I doubt 4 wheelin is popular. Its probably too cold for clothing optional lake parties like me and my friends do down south here, I guess at some point your options are kind of limited.

Another concern is that, obviously, all of the power, influence, and money are with the commercial interests in the urban areas, leaving little clout for rural areas to defend themselves with.

So, by "countryside" are we referring only to large, densely wooded areas? What about green, quiet pastoral land dotted with copses and small country villages? I saw a lot of the latter when I was there, and I find those areas to be just as nice.

    Examples:
