The overwhelming preference for sons over daughters is not just found in the Middle East or parts of Europe. It is common phenomenon here in the US as well.
Personally, it was a stroke of luck for me to be blessed with both one of each

Mine in past too, but i cut it when i was 6 years old. And, in Serbia parents like to use 'it' for a little child, and not always 'he' or 'she'. So when they would say 'it' about me, i was screaming at them... So, from my 6th they accepted that have a daughter and never said forbidden words! Haha, i am so proud on myself!
I'll think i should this as a compliment!

my father always refer to me as "Bir"(son)
though the word for daughter and son is almost the same.... Bir=Son Bi(bijë)=daughter
