Readers of today will always prefer recent books because they are more palatable to our taste.
I agree with all your points except for this. Readers of today would prefer something else, not reading the book. As George Bush (younger) said: I have had "Anna Karenina" on my table for some years but I didn't read it because its too big.

Yeah, I guess I was talking like a 20th-century guy. And I forgot we're already in the e-century.

Virginia Wolf tied with Mark Twain? Faulkner over Dickens? And where's Charles Bukowski?

    Default Great books...

Fear and loathing in Las Vegas... By Hunter S Thompson...

Very funny... Very funny illustrations too...
Philosophy is the study of general and fundamental problems such as those connected with reality... Existence, knowledge, values, reason, mind and language... It strikes me as peculiar that most concern themselves solely with language, the least of all philosophies...

Idiotic century? No, there are enough smart guys in the every generation, as for my observations.

This is a more objective list:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_100...ks_of_All_Time
    http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2002...ooks.booksnews
    http://www.evene.fr/livres/selection...les-temps.php?

The 100 books selected by this process and listed here are not ranked or categorized in any way; the organizers have stated that "they are all on an equal footing", with the exception of Don Quixote which was given the distinction "best literary work ever written".
