Macedonian Magazine Proposes Federation With Bulgaria
SOFIA, BULGARIA - The Macedonian magazine “Fokus” launched a cover edition proposing a federation with Bulgaria. They proposed a federation with Bulgaria as a possible way of Macedonia joining the EU and NATO.
Currently, Macedonia is struggling to join both organizations due to various reasons, notably the naming dispute with Greece. While Bulgarians and Macedonians are more or less ethnically and even verbally identical, a serious proposal for a joint federation or unification remains a controversial topic.
Fokus ran an edition with a picture of Bulgaria’s PM Boyko Borisov and the Macedonian PM Zoran Zaev and the headline “Federation with Bulgaria for entering in the EU and NATO.” Riste Lyobotenski is the author of this proposition. He used to work as an advisor to Macedonia’s first president, Kiro Gligorov. While Lyobotenski admits this is a novel idea, he also thinks it can work as a way to integrate into the West’s “Euro-Atlantic” ideals.
Currently, Macedonia is involved in a naming feud with Greece. The Macedonian TV station “Star” covered the topic on a federation with Bulgaria, asking its viewers the question “Is it possible to circle around Greece and her blocking?”
