I think that 3000 years of human history should give us a pretty good understanding of the "shortcomings" (or should we say homicidal nature ? Let's call a spade a spade.) of monotheism.

I actually support all gay rights EXCEPT gays serving openly in the military (or ideally at all). Communism and atheism are not the same thing (even if the communists claimed it was). Try again. Did you know that Hitler was a Catholic and that Stalin first tried to become an Orthodox minister ?

If anything I would argue that communism and national socialism were more akin to organised religion then to atheism as atheism is free-thinking. Monotheism is "one size fits all - convert or die" - totalitarianism.

A lot of guys from evangelical backgrounds wrestling with their homosexual desires have joined the marines as a desperate measure to "cure" themselves, under the assumption that doing something really really manly will counter their homosexuality. Guys with that mentality might feel especially threatened by the example of securely gay, totally masculine comrades. Securely heterosexual guys will quickly get over any anxieties about queers once they find themselves working and fighting alongside gay guys who have enough sense to not hit on anything with a dick.

Point taken on that bit, as these guys probably feel that the devils are tempting them or that they're woefully sinful and need to be cleansed of sin or somesuch Jesus-related weirdness. That's sort of the ugly side of evangelicalism: it can create truly moral, happy people or it can turn them into hypochondriacs.

I've nothing against queers as such; my main gripe is the politicization of the military by policy wanks.

Ummm catholicism or islam aren´t protestant faith, either. In fact almost all church crime were directly opposed to christian faith. And communism and national socialism both clearly were opposed to the bible and its God. Bibles were forbidden and churches closed in the Sovjet Union and bible believing Christians were persecuted in Nazi Germany, as people that lived in that time haved personally told me....

Catholic crimes definitely don´t have more to do with Christianity in it´s original sense than communism and national socialism have to with atheism.
